When our daughter, a teacher, was falsely accused of the physical neglect of a child in her care, we were flabbergasted. It couldn’t happen. She was blindly charged and the Department of Children and Families(DCF), in a rush to judgement, ‘substantiated’ the charge without her input. Her appeal with the input of her union representative and lawyer was dismissed out of hand although it showed that the events could not have happened as reported. We grew concerned that the lukewarm defense of the union lawyer was going to accomplish nothing. Here was a dedicated teacher with years of education and experience that was never going to be able to work again in her chosen field. Also, there was the stigma of having physically neglected a special needs child. You can imagine the emotional distress our daughter suffered related to this and the feeling of helplessness in not being able to defend herself effectively.
With the help of a former Connecticut school administrator we contacted 3-4 law firms. No one would take the case (not enough reward?). Finally, we heard of the Mark Sherman Law Firm from a retired teacher. We called and were immediately treated with understanding and respect. Mark Sherman recognized the injustice and incompetence that we had experienced, and his colleague Kathy Bella, formerly of DCF, noted the blatant errors DCF had made. In a very short time a hearing was scheduled. A week before the scheduled hearing we got an email from Mark: the ruling of physical neglect had been reversed. With a phone call from Mark to the DCF attorney the case was resolved and our daughter can resume her career.
I want to note how communicative Mark Sherman and his staff were. They answered all our questions quickly, even on evenings and weekends. We cannot praise the Mark Sherman Law Firm enough.
